New Exercise and Fitness Review
Fancy getting your race on? Why not try one of these summer events…
1. The triathlon 2.0
#supbikerun is not your usual triathalon. The event, which happens on 21st September, consists of a 30km paddle-board, 30km bike ride and 5km run around a fresh water lake just outside of Chichester, with direct access to stunning mountain bike trials. So, do as they do in Hawaii and register at www.surfdome.com/supbikerun
2. Be colourful
After holding colour crazy events across the UK, The Color Run presented by Dulux has unveiled plans for the biggest, boldest and brightest event of the year.
Colour runners will take over Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday September 28th, where more than 20, 000 will aim to recreate the sporting success of the London 2012 heroes. It’s not timed, so you can jog, walk or dance along the course. At each kilometre, colour explosions cover runners in kaleidoscopic fashion before DJs entertain the crowd in the Colour Festival after the finish line. Registration costs £25 for individuals and £23 p/person for group bookings. Visit www.thecolourrun.co.uk for more info.
3. For the hardcore
HQrecon, a military inspired endurance event, is launching to the mainstream following several successful ‘secret’ events, with the first two events due to take place at Charlton Park, Wiltshire, and Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire, in September this year. There is also a third event taking place in Hampshire, Tenantry Farm on 25th October.
The unique events are designed to test both physical fitness and mental agility, with skill and a sensible strategy just as important to your success, if not more so, than physical fitness.
The aim of the game is to infiltrate as many ‘zones’ as possible within a 3.5 hour time limit, to collect intelligence codes located within each zone. Each code collected equals points, however, ‘the hunters’ – professionally trained security personnel – are out to get you… get caught in a zone and you lose your points and are sentenced to a time penalty in the form of an energy-sapping 15 minute military-style circuit training session lead by an ex Royal Marine.
If a code is successfully collected, competitors can then choose to go straight on to their next zone (automatically allocated via a keypad at the zone entry point), or go back to base to bank the points. Going back to base takes time and energy, but if the hunters track you down before you bank, then all the points earned so far will be lost.
Participants therefore must pick their strategy; visit more zones in quick succession to collect more codes, or head back to base to protect the hard won points already accumulated. Base camp is located roughly 1.5km – 2km away from each zone, so safety versus time is a significant consideration to take. Tickets start from £69 per person.
