5 Healthy Summer Snack Recipes

New Exercise and Fitness Review

Summertime is all about getting together with your friends, soaking up some sun, and devouring delicious food. However barbecues, parties, and picnics don’t always have a healthy spread for those of us keeping an eye on our macros.

Don’t get me wrong: I have a serious weakness for steak and potato salad, but sometimes it’s nice to add a little healthy variation to traditional summer snacks. My favorite way to is to pair fresh fruits and vegetables with protein … and add a skewer!

These five recipes are quick and easy because my adventures and social life are a high priority. That’s what summer is all about, after all. Most of them only have about four ingredients and take about five minutes to prepare. But trust me, they look and taste like restaurant-quality appetizers!

So the next time you’re headed to a party, bring some of these simple, fresh skewers and snacks to share. Better yet, feel free to be selfish and hide them all in your fridge!

1 Caprese Salad

This Italian specialty is probably one of the most delicious combinations of flavors ever created. Layer fresh tomato, mozzarella, and basil, and you have a beautiful dish that is impossible not to like!

  1. Cut the mozzarella and tomatoes in quarter-inch slices.

  2. Layer them on a plate with the basil leaves.

  3. Optional: Drizzle balsamic vinegar or try a little sea salt and olive oil combination.

2 Red Pear and Prosciutto Skewers

Putting together sweet pears with salty prosciutto is a seriously tasty treat. The combination of textures just makes it even better. Bring this dish to a get-together and I bet you won’t even get to eat one.

  • 2 red pears

  • Package of prosciutto

  • Walden Farms balsamic vinegar

  • 4 skewers

  1. Chop the pears into triangular wedges.

  2. Roll slices of prosciutto and then cut into halves.

  3. Alternate pears and prosciutto on the skewers.

  4. Plate and drizzle with balsamic vinegar.

3 Turkey Avocado Skewers

If you’re watching your carb intake, these skewers are a great choice. The healthy fats from the avocado and the lean protein from the turkey are a perfect way to meet your nutritional goals without any extra or empty calories.

  1. Peel and chop avocados into triangular wedges.

  2. Roll turkey slices and cut into halves.

  3. Alternate avocado and turkey pieces on the skewers.

  4. Plate and drizzle with raspberry vinaigrette.

4 Cucumber Crab Wraps

The tuna and crackers snack is good, sure, but sometimes you need to add a little “fancy” to your nutrition. Instead of crackers, use fresh cucumber, and eat crab instead of tuna. It’s a wonderfully refreshing low-cal play on an old favorite.

  1. Peel cucumber and cut lengthwise into thin strips.

  2. Combine mayo, relish, and scallions in a bowl and stir.

  3. Place mayo mixture and crab pieces on a strip of cucumber, roll the cucumber, and fasten with a toothpick.

5 Teriyaki Tangelo Chicken Skewers

These excellent skewers are made with an Asian twist. The tangelos and teriyaki go perfectly with protein-packed chicken. It’s a yummy, healthy, fun dish that’s secretly easy but looks gourmet.

  • 2 tangelos

  • Organic oven-roasted chicken breast, sliced

  • 2 tbsp fat-free teriyaki sauce

  • 8 skewers

  1. Peel and divide tangelos into triangular wedges.

  2. Roll the chicken slices and then cut into halves.

  3. Alternate tangelos and chicken slices on the skewers.

  4. Plate and drizzle with teriyaki sauce.

Summer sports events

New Exercise and Fitness Review

Fancy getting your race on? Why not try one of these summer events…

1. The triathlon 2.0

#supbikerun is not your usual triathalon. The event, which happens on 21st September, consists of a 30km paddle-board, 30km bike ride and 5km run around a fresh water lake just outside of Chichester, with direct access to stunning mountain bike trials. So, do as they do in Hawaii and register at www.surfdome.com/supbikerun

2. Be colourful

After holding colour crazy events across the UK, The Color Run presented by Dulux has unveiled plans for the biggest, boldest and brightest event of the year.

Colour runners will take over Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday September 28th, where more than 20, 000 will aim to recreate the sporting success of the London 2012 heroes. It’s not timed, so you can jog, walk or dance along the course. At each kilometre, colour explosions cover runners in kaleidoscopic fashion before DJs entertain the crowd in the Colour Festival after the finish line. Registration costs £25 for individuals and £23 p/person for group bookings. Visit www.thecolourrun.co.uk for more info.

3. For the hardcore

HQrecon, a military inspired endurance event, is launching to the mainstream following several successful ‘secret’ events, with the first two events due to take place at Charlton Park, Wiltshire, and Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire, in September this year. There is also a third event taking place in Hampshire, Tenantry Farm on 25th October.

The unique events are designed to test both physical fitness and mental agility, with skill and a sensible strategy just as important to your success, if not more so, than physical fitness.

The aim of the game is to infiltrate as many ‘zones’ as possible within a 3.5 hour time limit, to collect intelligence codes located within each zone. Each code collected equals points, however, ‘the hunters’ – professionally trained security personnel – are out to get you… get caught in a zone and you lose your points and are sentenced to a time penalty in the form of an energy-sapping 15 minute military-style circuit training session lead by an ex Royal Marine.

If a code is successfully collected, competitors can then choose to go straight on to their next zone (automatically allocated via a keypad at the zone entry point), or go back to base to bank the points. Going back to base takes time and energy, but if the hunters track you down before you bank, then all the points earned so far will be lost.

Participants therefore must pick their strategy; visit more zones in quick succession to collect more codes, or head back to base to protect the hard won points already accumulated. Base camp is located roughly 1.5km – 2km away from each zone, so safety versus time is a significant consideration to take. Tickets start from £69 per person. Summer workouts

New Exercise and Fitness Review

Summer is the perfect opportunity to get moving  - the sun’s shining and the days are longer! It’s a chance for us to get outside and try out new ways to get fit! Here are our top 7 summer workouts and the best places to give them a go:

1. With Wimbledon in full swing why not grab a racquet and start knocking a few balls around! It offers a full-body workout plus the opportunity to have fun with a partner or friends. Many local parks have their own courts which are either free or great value. Both Regent’s Park and Hyde Park in central London offer a number of courts in stunning surroundings, perfect for a post-game cool-down walk!

2. Want to cool down and get fit? Try swimming! The perfect cardiovascular workout gets your blood pumping but doesn’t put too much pressure on any joints. Find your local lido online – they offer great pay-as-you-go sessions. My favourites are the swimming ponds at Hampstead Heath and Tooting Bec Lido.

3. If you fancy working up a sweat pounding the pavements, why not take up running? Another great cardio workout, it’s certain to tone up those legs ready to get them out this summer. Either team up with a friend to share the experience or join one of the many running clubs across the country – Nike running club offers programmes for free for all levels. If you’re feeling especially motivated why not sign up for a 5K or 10k race to motivate you to get training.

4. Park bootcamps will most certainly get you moving, sweating and working every muscle in your body. A combo of sprints, squats and press-ups are just a few of the exercises that will challenge your body. I would highly recommend British Military Fitness if you’re after an intense outdoor training session. With over 130 different locations in the UK, there is bound to be a class near you.

5. If you like a dose of sunshine (who doesn’t?) with your regular yoga practice, then try outdoor yoga. In fact, go one step further and try We Heart Living’s Rooftop Yoga this summer. Yep, that’s right, not only can you lap up some vitamin D while doing your downward dogs, but you’ll also get to take in a magnificent view of London at the same time.

6. Rooftop yoga is definitely having a moment, and if you’re not in the capital this summer then you can enjoy panoramic views of Bristol’s skyline at a rooftop yoga session at The OfficeGroup, Bristol. Get your downward dog on as you enjoy the relaxing scenery and boost your flexibility. All abilities welcome at this fantastic lunchtime session.

7. Finally, ff you’re after a slightly calmer way to stay fit this summer why not make the most of your local area and take up walking. I don’t mean a slow, lazy walk but a brisk, steady pace making the most of any hills that you may come across. Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill are ideal walking spots and you will certainly find yourself working your bum and legs as you take in the sights.
