Looking For Participants - Testosterone Study/Survey (Approved by Basskiller)

New Exercise and Fitness Review

Thank you to Basskiller for approving this post

I’m a 4th year Urology resident performing a study concerning the current usage patterns of testosterone, associated AAS, and potential side effects including fertility outcomes. To be a candidate for the study you must be a male (18+) with a history of testosterone use (in any form with or without other AAS) for any period of time. People providing their own TRT/HRT are encouraged to participate, but those on TRT/HRT with physician guidance are excluded. This is not an anti-steroid study, we are merely looking at usage patterns, reasons for use, and our primary interest is future fertility since we see many similar patients in clinic. The study is an anonymous 5 minute survey. No future contact will be made with study participants and there’s no legal liability. I would greatly appreciate your time and participation. Feel free to post any questions in this thread and I will address them as promptly as possible. When the results are in and I have the manuscript written, I’ll be sure to share them with all participating forums.

The study is currently posted on 3 AAS forums, 2 bodybuilding forums, and 1 HRT/TRT forum. In addition it has been distributed widely in my local area. I have accrued 224 participants and my goal is 300. I have had excellent feedback from most people taking the survey and they have been great to work with.

Contemporary Usage Of Testosterone – Cohort Description, Utilization Patterns, And Adverse Effects

Thank you for taking the below linked survey. The study protocol has been approved by our Institutional Review Board (IRB). Your answers are anonymous, confidential, and free of legal liability. No future contact will be made regarding the study.

Low testosterone levels are associated with poor peripheral bone mineral density and quantitative bone ultrasound at phalanges and calcaneus in healthy elderly men.

Biol Res Nurs. 2015 Mar;17(2):169-74

Authors: Moran JM, Martin RR, Pedrera-Canal M, Alonso-Terron J, Rodriguez-Velasco FJ, Pedrera-Zamorano JD

Abstract
Variations in sex hormones influence bone health in men. Aging in men is associated with a decrease in testosterone (T) levels. We examined the relationship between T levels and changes in bone health status as measured by quantitative ultrasound (QUS) at the phalanges and the os calcis and by peripheral bone mineral density (pBMD) at the phalanges in healthy elderly Spanish men. We examined 162 men aged 65-88 years and assessed total serum T concentrations. Total serum T < 300 ng/dL was used as the threshold for biochemical T deficiency. The sample was divided into low (n = 66) or normal (n = 96) T levels; both groups were matched for age, weight, height, and body mass index (p > .05 for all the comparisons). All measured bone parameters were higher in the normal serum T group (p < .05). Multiple regression analysis revealed that serum T was an independent predictor of both QUS at the calcaneus and phalangeal pBMD. Our data indicate that T is an independent determinant of QUS at the os calcis and pBMD at the phalanges in elderly Spanish men.

How to Measure Your Testosterone Level (Blood Work and TRT)

New Exercise and Fitness Review

How to Measure Your Testosterone Level (Blood Work and TRT)
February 28, 2014 By Danger & Play

Finding out your testosterone level isn’t some mystery. It’s pretty simply, really, and involves an inexpensive blood test that can be done in most any city. Here is how to measure your testosterone level.

[Disclaimer: This is not medical advice. These are my thoughts and opinions based on my own research and education. Always consult with a physician to discuss your testosterone level.]

Step 1. Go to Private MD Labs by clicking this link. Use Coupon Code HEALTHY12 to save 12%.

Private MD Labs allows you to order your own blood test to measure your testosterone level. You don’t need a doctor’s letter or permission. This allows you to understand and learn about your own health. The tests are not covered by insurance. I pay for mine using my Healthcare Savings Account.

You then find a local lab from their list (this is all covered during the checkout process) and go in to get your blood drawn.

I recommend the Female Hormone Panel (this one) for guys on a budget. The Female Hormone Panel will give you your total testosterone level but not your free testosterone level. (Some say you need to know both your free and total testosterone levels. Based on my experience, that is not true. If your total testosterone levels are low, then you have low T. If your total T is high, then your free testosterone levels are fine. Others disagree and that’s cool.)

Female Hormone Testing Panel (available here) contains the following tests:

 • Estradiol, Serum

 • Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

 • Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

 • Testosterone, Serum

 • Complete Blood Count (CBC)

 • Comprehensive Metabolic Profile

Don’t worry if that seems overwhelming. We are going to discuss all of those tests using actual lab work. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page for a video.)

If you want to know your free testosterone level, then you’ll need to order a more expensive lab test. The Hormone Panel for Males test gives you your free and total testosterone level as well as your HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, lipid levels, and more.

Hormone Panel for Males (available here) contains the following tests:

 • Lipid Profile

 • Complete Blood Count w/ Differential

 • Estradiol, Sensitive

 • Insulin Growth Factor (IGF-1)

 • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

 • Testosterone (Free) , Serum (Equilibrium Ultrafiltration) With Total Testosterone

 • Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)

 • Thyroid Profile

If you have a little bit more cash, then the Male Anti-Aging Panel is a great one. The Male Anti-Aging Panel is overkill for men under 30 and maybe even overkill for men under 40. Because my health is important to me, I spend the extra cash for this test even though I am under 40.

I personally get the Male Anti-Aging Panel done once each year as part of my overall check-up. I get the Female Hormone Panel done twice each year to monitor my testosterone and estrogen levels.

The Male Anti-Aging Panel (available here) contains the following tests:

 • Lipid Profile

 • Complete Blood Count w/ Differential

 • Estradiol, Sensitive

 • Insulin Growth Factor (IGF-1)

 • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

 • Testosterone, Free (Direct), Serum With Total Testosterone

 • Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)

 • Thyroid Profile

 • Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) Sulfate

 • Thyroxine (T4) Free, Direct

 • Tri-iodothyronine (T3), Free, Serum

Step 2. Wait 48 to 72 hours to get your blood test results.

I’ve had my blood tests back the next day. Sometimes it takes up to 3 days. If you get your labs done on a Friday, you might not get your results back until Wednesday or Thursday.

It’s great because once your labs are done, you get an email with a PDF of those results. No more blindly following your doctor who says, “Your labs are fine.”

This puts you in the driver’s seat of your own health.

Step 3. Analyze those results.

Check out this video to see how I analyze blood work. This is not medical advice. This is just what I personally think about the lab work.
(You may need to click on the video to full screen mode to see the paperwork.)

Testosterone alters testis function through regulation of piRNA expression in rats.

Testosterone alters testis function through regulation of piRNA expression in rats.

Mol Biol Rep. 2014 Jul 6;

Authors: Kang HJ, Moon MJ, Lee HY, Han SW

Abstract
Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) play a role in gene silencing of retrotransposons, maintenance of spermatogenesis and maturation in germlines. The piRNA and PIWI protein are essential for fertility. To reveal piRNA function associated with testosterone, we investigated the expression of piRNA and piwi protein in normal male rats and testosterone-treated rats. Normal Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly selected and sacrificed at neonatal to late adolescence stage stages (2, 9, 16, 20, 24, 28, 35, and 42.days, n.=.6 each). Additional SD rats were divided into four groups: group 1 received weekly injections of testosterone enanthate (8.mg/100.g) during 1-3.weeks; group 2 during 3-5.weeks; group 3 during 1-5.weeks; and group 4 was the control (n.=.20 each). These animals were sacrificed at an age of 60.days. We investigated piRNA, PIWI, and Ago3 protein levels using real-time PCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry in each group. In normal rats, PIWI protein and piRNA were expressed at P24. The expression of PIWI and piRNA gradually increased from adolescence to adulthood on Western blot, real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry. In testosterone-treated rats, the expression of PIWI protein was analyzed by Western blot and shown to be significantly increased in group 1 (neonatal to juvenile injection). In real-time PCR, the expression of piRNA after testosterone treatment was increased in all groups (G1 166.8.±.2.7; G2 113.3.±.4.6; G3 70.2.±.1.5 vs. control, 32.87.±.2.0, all p.
