Internet supplements - a click towards poor performance

New Exercise and Fitness Review

Sports Medicine Australia, the peak organisation for professionals in sports medicine and sports science, has urged those considering purchasing performance enhancing products via the internet to think again.

With the recent news that an elite footballer is facing a two year playing ban for inadvertently purchasing a banned substance via the internet, highlights the need for caution to be exercised when dealing with online purchase of supplements.

Sports Medicine Australia spokesperson and sports physician Dr Peter Larkins said with the prevalence of online ‘drug’ shopping at an all time high, all shoppers need to realise the dangers associated with dealing with products such as these in the online space.

“There are a lot of people purchasing products online in the belief of outcomes such as enhanced sporting performance and weight loss,” said Dr Peter Larkins.

“Quite often they are unaware that the products they are purchasing contain banned substances such as anabolic substances and amphetamines.

“Online sites target those looking for a quick fix and often they don’t always disclose their product ingredients raising the prospect of unsuspecting buyers, purchasing masked, harmful and often banned substances.

“Sportspeople, whether at an elite or community level considering purchasing supplements of any kind should be aware that the internet is not the place to buy.

“Supplements should only be purchased from reputable outlets and always be bought in consultation with a suitable sports medicine practitioner or sports dietitian .

“This will ensure that what is purchased is not a waste of money, will not be detrimental to one’s health and not a banned substance” said Dr Peter Larkins.

For more on the dangers of performance enhancing drugs Sports Medicine Australia has developed the CleanEdge website which provides information on all aspects of enhancing sporting performance.

Effects of a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution on cognitive performance following exe

New Exercise and Fitness Review

Effects of a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution on cognitive performance following exe

Background:There is limited information on the effects of sports drinks on cognitive function after exercise in the heat. We aimed to investigate the effects of ingesting a commercially available carbohydrate-electrolyte (CHO) solution on cognitive performance following exercise-induced hyperthermia. Methods:Twelve participants completed three practices of cognitive tests, one full familiarisation and two experimental trials in an environmental chamber (dry bulb temperature: 30.2???0.3?C, relative humidity: 70???3%). The experimental trials consisted of five cognitive tests (symbol digit matching, search and memory, digit span, choice reaction time and psychomotor vigilance test) performed before and after a 75-min run on a treadmill at 70% VO2 max. One ml/kg body mass of a 6.8% CHO solution or placebo was consumed at the start, every 15?min during exercise and between cognitive tests after exercise. Core temperature, heart rate, blood glucose concentrations, subjective ratings and cognitive performance were assessed (symbol digit matching, search and memory, digit span, choice reaction time and psychomotor vigilance). Results:Participants were hyperthermic at the end of the run (placebo: 39.5???0.4?C, CHO: 39.6???0.5?C; Mean???SD; p?=?0.37). The change in blood glucose was higher with CHO ingestion (1.6, 0.7 to 4.5?mmol/L) (median, range) than with placebo ingestion (0.9, -0.1 to 4.7?mmol/L; p??0.05).Conclusions:These results suggest that CHO solution ingestion may impair short-term memory following exertional heat stress.

Like you did with squats and deadlifts during your lower-body max-effort day, try hitting your best bench numbers today. Use all of that excellent dynamic training to explode the bar off of your chest, no matter how heavy the weight. Push with as much force as possible to move the load with maximum power, even if it moves slowly because it’s heavy.

After you’ve crushed a PR, give your all on your pull-ups, rows, skullcrushers, and push-ups. In the mix of all these movements, it’s easy to forget the fundamentals of good form. Remember all the form work you did during the first weeks of AMP. Engage your core, lift with a full range of motion, and reap the rewards of technical proficiency.
