2014 Men's Physique Olympia Report: Victory For Jeremy Buendia

New Exercise and Fitness Review

The Olympia Weekend’s Men’s Physique category returned in full force today, showcasing a powerhouse lineup of familiar names and bodies, with many holdovers from last year’s inaugural competition. As with the women’s division, the 18 guys who lined the stage showed that the division is truly coming into its own both with the standards that it sets and the results it brings. Everyone came in well-conditioned but not too dry, muscular but not gigantic, and perfectly symmetrical from shoulders to board shorts.

Although all the men on stage looked like they belonged on the cover of a magazine, Jeremy Buendia’s insane V-taper and excellent front pose brought him the trophy. Buendia obviously used what he learned from his runner-up finish last year to improve upon his already-great physique.

Jeremy Buendia

Sadik Hadzovic

“It was a long year,” said Buendia to emcee Bob Cicherillo. “Coming off last year’s second place, I had one thing on my mind, and that was to win.”

During prejudging, the first callout brought Matt Acton, Jeremy Buendia, Sadik Hadzovic, Steve Cook, Jason Poston, and Mark Anthony Wingson to center stage. The judges took plenty of time reconfiguring the competitors’ positions so they could get a look at each guy in side-by-side comparisons.

Hadzovic looked fantastic, as he always does. The competition between him and Buendia was tough, as the two were placed next to each other in the center for the majority of the round.

Cook also looked great just a month out from his victory at the Dallas Pro, but he couldn’t match the broad shoulders and small waist that Hadzovic and Buendia offered. Although he—and the crowd—may not have been thrilled with that decision, it was a big improvement from his 8th-place finish last year.

Jason Poston

Matt Acton

Steve Cook

Mark A. Wingson

Poston and Acton both brought great packages to the competition. They’ve both competed really well this year, and with each having a pair of IFBB victories to their name since last year’s Olympia, expectations were clearly high. Poston’s finish was two spots better than he earned last year, whereas Acton slipped down a place. Wingson—last year’s champ—managed to squeeze into the first callout, but was ultimately on the outside of the top five looking in.

Michael Anderson, Anton Antipov, Tyler Anderson, Tory Woodward, and Xavisus Gayden came forward for the second callout. All five of the guys presented physiques that could easily have won other shows. But this is the Olympia, and only the absolute best make it to the top tier.

After a long confirmation round, the judges brought back Buendia and Hadzovic for another round of side-by-side posing. That one last round gave the audience a peek at who the judges would put in the top two positions. After a few tense moments of anticipation, the judges called out Hadzovic for second. Buendia took his honors, with big cheers from the crowd.

2014 Men's Physique Olympia Preview: Battle Of The Aesthetics

New Exercise and Fitness Review

In its second year as an Olympia weekend contest, the Men’s Physique show looks to be just as exciting and competitive as it was last year—if not more so. Because the judges and competitors better understand the division, look for the guys to be more dialed, with their V-tapers more pronounced and their stage personality more robust. Everybody wants to win, so you can be sure the whole field has improved.

Mark Anthony Wingson’s Olympia win last year taught us that the judges look for an aesthetic shape that’s not overly-muscled, as well as a great stage presentation.

Wingson has 17 incredible athletes chasing him this year, and with more experience under their belts he’ll have a tough time keeping his place on the podium.

Who’s Top Dog—And Who’s Nipping At Mark’s Heels?

Here are my picks for the 2014 Olympia Men’s Physique contest, listed in descending order. I’m basing my list off what the guys did last year and how they’ve been placing this year in big shows.

These are also the guys who I think are the best representation of what the Men’s Physique division is all about. They have the right proportions, great aesthetics, and that hard-to-describe intangible—the right “look.”

Let me know your choices in the comments section below!

6th Michael Anderson

Anderson has a really good chance because he’s been competing a lot more than many of the other guys on the card this year, and he seems to get better and better. He placed 7th at last year’s Olympia and has steadily moved up the ranks in every show he’s competed in since.

If he nails his conditioning and posing, he could nab one of the top spots. If he doesn’t, he’ll end up disappointed again this year.

5th Jeremy Buendia

Buendia placed second at last year’s Olympia and has won two shows since then. It’s clear he’s got the look and personality to do really well, but I wonder how he will stack up when he competes against the top dogs in the world. Although I’m not sure he can win, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him as high as second place again this year.

4th Steve Cook

Cook’s disappointing 8th-place finish last year had a lot of people wondering if the judges were blind. It’s hard to imagine the Boise, Idaho, resident cracking the top three, but I’d be surprised if he were left out of the top five again, especially if he brings an even better package than he brought to his first-place Dallas Pro showing.

3rd Mark Anthony Wingson

Wingson won the first-ever Men’s Physique Olympia. No one can ever take that away from him. This year, though, I don’t think he’ll regain his top spot. He only has one other contest under his belt this year—although he did win it.

His lines just aren’t as clean and his aesthetic just isn’t quite what it should be. He looks a little blocky to me. However, I’ve been surprised before and no doubt could be surprised again.

2nd Sadik Hadzovic

After placing fourth in last year’s Olympia, Hadzovic has his eyes on a bigger prize. He has a huge crowd following and a lot of Men’s Physique fans hope to see him win. He placed 2nd at the New York Pro, behind Jason Poston, and recently won the PBW Tampa Pro. He has an insane V-taper and personality to burn. I think he has what it takes to earn one of the top positions.

1st Jason Poston

After a 5th-place finish at the 2013 Olympia, Poston wants to prove he deserves the top spot on the podium. He’s won three of his last four events, including the New York Pro. He looks damn good on stage.

As a type 1 diabetic, Poston gives new meaning to the phrase “pumped up,” and he has become an outspoken enthusiast for health and fitness. In my opinion, he’s a perfect representative of the look and personality of the Men’s Physique division.

Other Notables

Jeff Seid, Matt Christianer, and Anton Antipov

Although these guys aren’t in my top six, they’ve made an impact on the division and deserve their Olympia qualification. Any of these guys could break the top six if they bring their best packages to the Olympia stage:

Jeff Seid

Seid’s Internet fame brings him a lot of fans, but those shouts in the crowd don’t always help him place well. Since his 11th place finish at the Olympia in 2013, Seid has spent the last year trying to earn better spots.

He’s gotten as high as 2nd at the Greater Gulf States Pro and 3rd at the Dallas Pro. Despite these good showings, I just don’t think he has what it takes to crack the Olympia top six.

Matt Christianer

Although Christianer hasn’t placed any higher than 4th this year, he has the potential and genetics to do really well. Since his last 1st place win at the 2013 Pro Grand Prix Pro, Christianer has struggled to find the right condition. Although he has the tendency to come in a little hard, he can also swing too far the other way.

Anton Antipov

Since his 12th-place finish at the Olympia last year, Antipov has contested better at various shows. To wit, he won the Prestige Crystal Cup and recently earned 2nd at the PWB Tampa Pro, just behind Hadzovic.

If Antipov comes to Vegas with the same look he’s been bringing to his recent shows, he could very well jump into the top six.

2014 Arnold Classic IFBB Pro Men's Bodybuilding Preview

New Exercise and Fitness Review

Since its inception in 1989, the unparalleled Arnold Sports Festival has attracted droves of people to Columbus, Ohio every year for myriad sporting events like archery, fencing, and gymnastics, just to name a few. Of course, the reason bodybuilding fans love this time of year is the Arnold Classic. The world’s best IFBB pro bodybuilders will be in Columbus from February 27 to March 2, and you can bet they’ll be gunning for the top prize.

For many superstar hopefuls, this annual pilgrimage to what some may consider the Mecca of bodybuilding is an opportunity to stand alongside some of the best bodies in the business, showcase long hours of hard work, and gain bragging rights. In addition to the main event, the men’s Arnold Classic, this year’s show also includes the Fitness, Bikini, and Figure International, as well as the brand new Arnold Classic 212.

This year’s Arnold stage will see no shortage of incredible bodies from a variety of promising newcomers and established seasoned vets. As they say, this year’s event is wide open. In my mind, several men stand out of the Arnold Classic ranks. Join me as I take a look and make some bold predictions.

9th Brandon Curry

Brandon Curry has big things ahead of him. After triumphant appearances at the 2013 Arnold Classic Brazil and at the 2008 NPC USA Bodybuilding Championships, some are calling Curry the next bodybuilding superstar. His weaknesses in proper conditioning and leg development may get in the way of a sure-fire win, but based on his prior top six placements, he will at least have a spot on the top ten list.

8th Victor Martinez

Victor Martinez is one of those contenders who definitely shows promise and potential but just doesn’t quite make the cut when it counts. Formerly an Olympia favorite, Martinez has an enviable body shape that cannot be attained merely with barbells and a proper diet. Despite having such a genetic gift, Martinez hasn’t been able to place himself among the pantheon of bodybuilding immortals. Call it bad luck or bad decision-making, but you can still count on Martinez to show up enough to strut his way to top ten placement.

7th Evan Centopani

A massive competitor with enough raw size to dominate any pro stage, the 260-pound Evan Centopani made the best possible first impression by winning his pro debut at the 2009 New York Pro. He followed up this early success with another victory at the 2011 Flex Pro Show and placed fourth at the Arnold Classic shortly thereafter. Things seemed to only be on the upswing until 8th and 13th finishes at the 2012 and 2013 Olympias, respectively, slowed down his initial momentum. There’s no denying that he has the attributes—arguably the best shoulders, chest, and arm development around—to trounce the competition, but it’s just a question of whether he’ll be prepared to flaunt it when it counts. If he does, he could easily spring to top six placement.

6th Toney Freeman

At 47, the age-defying Toney Freeman continues to amaze with his primed muscle development and striking symmetry. Called the X Man, who has been pro since 2003, Freeman placed third at last year’s Arnold and second at both the Masters Olympia and Pro World in 2012. This impressive pedigree, along with some of the widest shoulders and a set of incredible posing skills, has made him a fan-favorite. Motivated by his disappointing finish at his last Olympia, Freeman is likely to step it up this year to redeem himself.

5th Branch Warren

Branch Warren has an impressive record: as a two-time Arnold champion and one-time Olympia runner-up, he’s pretty much done it at all as a pro bodybuilder. Unfortunately, his excessively vascular and grainy back, chest, and arm developments have left a blemish on an otherwise incredible frame. In addition, his gargantuan legs and pure mass can be cited as other possible shortcomings.

Interestingly, his weaker body parts were still larger than many of his peers, allowing him to win the Arnold Classic Most Muscular title more times than he won the event itself! With a much improved upper body, Branch is a more complete bodybuilder, although he now lacks the shredded shape that gave him his legendary status. Some feel his ninth place finish at last year’s Olympia was quite generous, but I have a feeling he will bring the bang this year.

4th Cedric McMillan

There probably isn’t a single inch on this 6-foot frame that isn’t covered by shapely muscle. The 2013 FIBO Power Germany champion, Cedric McMillan, hearkens back to the taller competitors of old, except that he holds around 40 pounds more muscle. Though he missed his mark and placed a mediocre 12th at both the 2013 Arnold Classic and Olympia events, McMillan continues to impress with his currently unrivaled potential. As we know, however, raw potential doesn’t always equate to wins. Should he put a few more finishing touches on his otherwise flawless physique and bring the super shredded Heath-like conditioning that wins shows, there will be no touching this statuesque competitor.

3rd Ben Pakulski

Huge, freakishly conditioned, and balanced are the perfect descriptors for the physique Big Ben Pakulski routinely brings to the IFBB stage. With an excellent record that includes a second place finish at last year’s Arnold and third place at the Australian Pro Grand Prix shortly after, Pakulski will always be a threat when he’s at his best. Having sat out the 2013 Olympia, Pakulski has had more time to prepare to do one better than his 2013 placement at this year’s Arnold Classic. I think he certainly has it in him, too, as he has the best legs in the business and an impressive upper body. It’s merely a matter of time for the Colossal Canadian.

2nd Shawn Rhoden

Speaking of winning potential, the near-perfectly proportioned Shawn Rhoden is ready for a successful year. In the last fourteen pro contests, he’s wrapped up four wins and third and fourth place finishes at the 2012 and 2013 Olympias, respectively. Rhoden is definitely a favorite to win this year’s Arnold. His pro career took off on shaky legs, but he worked his abs off and returned better than ever to blow everyone away en route to becoming one of 2012 and 2013′s top pro competitors. At 5-foot-10 and 240 pounds, he is poised to snag a spot in the top three or maybe even a victory this year, but there is a certain German Giant in his way.

1st Dennis Wolf

Dennis Wolf is no stranger to pressures of the big stage. He’s recovered from a 16th position at his first Olympia in 2006 to take third at last year’s event. Dennis Wolf comes into this year’s Arnold Classic as a favorite to win the show. Huge, shredded, and aesthetically pleasing for such a large competitor, the monolithic German took second at both the 2011 and 2012 Arnolds, and a win at the 2012 IFBB EVLs Prague Pro Championships. For Wolf to win this year, he simply needs to show up with career-best conditioning, which isn’t exactly his strong suit. Wolf has the size and shape to beat his fellow pros, but poor calf development could allow a particularly strong contender to edge him out. If all things align for Dennis, 2014 could be Year of the Wolf.
