UFC Fight Night: 5 things we learnt

New Exercise and Fitness Review

Saturday’s UFC Fight Night: Gustafsson vs Manuwa took place at The O2 Arena, and the atmosphere was nothing short of electric. There might’ve been a little uncertainty in the event’s lead-up thanks to what seemed like an endless number of changes to the fight card, but come fight night, the UFC pulled off yet another impressive and entertaining event, proving that they really are the crème de la crème of mixed martial arts.

Two of Europe’s finest fighters in London’s Jimi Manuwa and Stockholm’s Alexander Gustafsson carried the weight of the event on their shoulders, with major support by top billers such as Brad Pickett, Gunnar Nelson and Luke Barnatt. We could go on for days listing the reasons why this was one of the strongest UK MMA events for ages, but here are just five of our favourite moments from the night.

1 London pride

Although Manuwa didn’t get the win on Saturday, he showcased both his skill and growth against one of the best light heavyweights in the world. Let’s not forget that Gustafsson’s last outing ended in a close decision against the current champ. The south London fighter, Manuwa, gained a wealth of experience in his fight against Gustafsson and we’re excited about his future in the UFC and how it can help MMA develop in this country.

2 Change can be good

When we first heard that Bruce Buffer wouldn’t be doing the ring announcements at this event, we were pretty miffed. But Andy Friedlander did as good as you could expect from anyone that isn’t Bruce Buffer himself, and John Gooden and Dan Hardy were pretty entertaining in the commentary booth, too.

3 Gunnar Nelson: Believe the hype

The unassuming 25-year-old from Iceland has been out of action for over a year with an injury, but there wasn’t a hint of ring rust in sight. The prodigy – who has been on the lips of every MMA fan and pundit for years – never fails to impress. It wasn’t surprising, then, that he took home a $ 50,000 bonus for his performance.

4 UFC fans don’t like One Direction

It was evident on Saturday night that there isn’t much of an overlap when it comes to MMA fans and One Direction fans, funnily enough. When 1D’s Niall Horan came up on the big screen, the crowd responded with boos. The boos quickly turned into cheers once MC Hammer appeared, though. Yes, really.

5 We want women

Although the UFC event on Saturday was spectacular in more ways than we can list here, one thing’s for sure: we want to see more women fighting on the big stage. Although the likes of Ronda Rousey and Rosi Sexton have really broken down barriers for women in MMA, it’s still early days and we’d love to see more women get involved in the sport so that we never have to see a card without a female fight on it again.
